What we are learning:
Reading is promoted and modelled to all our children throughout their time at school. Children will have a daily reading lesson where they will learn how to read fluently as well as make inference, predictions and retrieve key words or phrases to answer comprehension questions. As children encounter new vocabulary we will explore the definitions of these words within the context of the book and the effect this has on the meaning. Alongside daily reading lessons, we have a story at the end of every day to continue fostering a love of reading.
Phonics is taught everyday using a systematic and synthetic phonics structure. Children will continue to learn how to decode unfamiliar words through blending and segmenting. Alongside this they will explore spelling patterns and rules.
In English we will be using a range of books linked to Asia to inspire our writing. The children will write poetry on famous landmarks exploring how to use ambitious vocabulary for description. Our non-fiction writing will start with writing non-chronological reports on Asian animals. We will also look at traditional Asian folktales and rewrite some of our own.
During this term, the children will explore multiplication and division. They will then use this knowledge to solve word problems. All children need to fluent with their 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables so please support this at home.. We will then explore 2D and 3D shapes and statistics.
Within our Maths lessons children will be expected to work in pairs, groups and independently to solve problems and explain their thinking.
Topic and Science:
In Topic and Science our focus is Amazing Asia The children will learn about where Asia is, what animals live across Asia, famous landmarks. Within Art we will be focusing on collage and pattern for the first half term but still linked to our topic of Asia.
Spelling remains a huge focus within year 2. Children will learn about alternative spelling rules as well as consolidation the spelling of common exception words.
The expectation across year 2 is that PE kits come into school on a Monday, and then remain in school for the whole half term.
Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit, including clothing to match weather conditions such as tracksuit/jogging bottoms and a hoodie. Please ensure all kit is named and that on PE days children with pierced ears have earrings removed and that any long hair is tied back when they come to school and remains tied up throughout the day.
Green class have PE all Monday afternoon.
Purple class have PE all Tuesday afternoon.
Homework will be given out on a Friday and needs to be handed back in the following Thursday. Please read with your child every day; they can change their books as and when they need to.
If you have any questions, concerns or queries please come and see a member of the Year 2 team. We are available in the playground at the end of the school day or please arrange an appointment at the office if you require a longer meeting.
